The Law, the Talk, and the Care 

This seminar offers nurses, physicians, social workers, lawyers, and other professionals the opportunity to learn more about advance care planning and advance directives. Held a little less than a month before National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16, the seminar provides an opportunity for lawyers, nurses, physicians, and social workers to learn about all aspects of advance care planning from some of the nation’s foremost experts on advance care planning: Ira Byock, MD, Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Betsy Clark, PhD, ACSW, MPH, the Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers and Bill Colby, Esq, Senior Fellow: Law and Patients Rights at the Center for Practical Bioethics.  The event will be moderated by Nathan Kottkamp, Esq.

At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to: 

• Communicate the objectives of the National Healthcare Decisions Day initiative and access additional web-based information about the campaign. 
• State the primary legal issues related to advance care planning. 
• Utilize communication strategies to explore advance care planning with clients/patients/the public. 
• Discuss common clinical scenarios where advance care planning comes into play and ways to strengthen the expression of care preferences to facilitate care.

CE/CME documentation will be provided by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and CLE documentation will be provided by the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA).

Nurses: NHPCO is an approved provider of continuing education in nursing by the Virginia Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval Committee, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. VNA-CEA Provider Number 06-04-06. Accredited status by ANCC and VNA refers only to continuing nursing education activities and does not imply endorsement of any commercial product. This seminar is approved for 1 hour of continuing nursing education credit.

Physicians: The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

NHPCO designates this continuing medical education activity for 1 AMA PRA Category 1 credit.™ Physicians should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Social Workers: This program is pending approval by the National Association of Social Workers (provider 886414158).
